In 2017, organization founders Jen and Kali took a bold step toward creating a more inclusive and supportive space for the trans community by founding the Facebook group “Trans, Non-binary and Genderqueer Network.” Their vision was clear: to provide a safe online haven where individuals could connect, share experiences, and find solidarity. The group quickly gained traction, proving the deep need for dedicated resources and community-driven support.

Our safe and inclusive social media spaces connect individuals with peers and valuable resources

Organizational Vision
Gender Freedom Society envisions a future where transgender individuals not only enjoy full equity and acceptance but thrive in a society that celebrates their diverse identities. Our long-term goal is to create systemic change by influencing policies and attitudes on a global scale, ensuring that transgender rights are enshrined and respected universally. Through sustained education, advocacy, and community-building efforts, we aim to eradicate discrimination and create a world where everyone, regardless of gender identity, can live authentically and without fear. Our vision is of a society where gender diversity is not only normalized but celebrated as a fundamental aspect of human experience, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
Our Timeline of Growth
Determined to make a lasting impact beyond social media, senior staff founded Gender Freedom Society as a nonprofit organization. Their mission was to amplify the voices of the trans community and establish a formal network dedicated to advocacy, empowerment, and inclusion. This pivotal moment marked the transition from an online group to an organization committed to driving change.
Less than four years after its inception, Gender Freedom Society flourished into a fully volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit, operating virtually from Des Moines, Iowa. With a clear and unwavering mission, GFS became a beacon of support for transgender individuals, offering vital resources, education, and community-building efforts.
Our initiatives focus on fostering acceptance, uplifting individuals, and advocating for the recognition and rights of trans and non-binary people.
With a strong foundation and a growing network of passionate advocates, Gender Freedom Society continues to expand its reach and deepen its impact. As the movement for trans rights progresses, GFS remains committed to fostering inclusivity, ensuring access to vital resources, and promoting awareness in the broader society. The journey is far from over—Gender Freedom Society is shaping the future, one step at a time.
A Bit More About GFS
Our mission is to advocate for systemic change and social justice by amplifying transgender voices and fostering understanding, empathy, and allyship. Through education, outreach, and community building, we strive to normalize transgender existence, combat discrimination, and create a respectful and inclusive environment. We envision a world where gender diversity is celebrated as a core element of human experience; a world where everyone, regardless of gender identity, can live authentically and fearlessly, free from discrimination and bias.
Our strategy is to “Educate, Advocate, and Empower to build an Inclusive World,” supported by two pillars: Education and Advocacy.
In Education, we develop training databases to provide knowledge and guidance on transgender topics. Our “Trans 101” training focuses on respectful interactions and inclusive practices, with future plans to create content on supporting trans people and addressing gender dysphoria.
In Advocacy, we engage in active advocacy and train the trans community and allies. Key initiatives include the Rainbow Justice Initiative (proposed) and Write for Change (ongoing).
We began as a Facebook group in 2017, known as Trans Non-Binary and Genderqueer Network. In 2020, our senior staff recognized the need to engage with our community beyond social media, leading to our official incorporation as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2021. Today, in addition to our heavily moderated social media platform with 17,000 members, we focus on creating informative and accurate educational content. This includes e-learning resources tailored for specific industries and educational materials designed for the transgender community.
Our organization is virtually based, entirely volunteer-run, driven by a shared passion for supporting the transgender community. Most of our work is focused on the United States, but we have volunteers that help us virtually from all over the world!
